The Art of Thoughtful Gifting: Why Some Gifts Mean More

Finding a gift is easy.

Finding something that still means something years later is much harder.

The gifts we tend to remember aren’t necessarily the biggest or most expensive. They’re the ones that tell us someone really thought about who we are, what we might enjoy and how they wanted us to feel.

Sometimes that’s something practical. Sometimes it’s something beautiful.

And sometimes it’s simply something that brings comfort.

What Makes a Gift Truly Thoughtful?

A thoughtful gift doesn’t necessarily need to be elaborate.

Often, the best gifts have a few things in common: they’re chosen with the recipient in mind, they’re useful enough to become part of everyday life, and they carry some meaningful beyond the object itself.

That’s one reason we think blankets make such lovely gifts.

A blanket isn’t something that has to wait for a special occasion to be used. It can become part of someone’s home almost immediately — on the sofa, across the bed or within reach on a favourite chair.

And over time, it can become associated with the person who gave it.

A Gift for a New Beginning

Some occasions naturally call for comfort.

A new baby is perhaps the most obvious.

A beautiful blanket can become part of those earliest family days and, as we’ve recently discovered from our own customers, sometimes remain part of the family for an extraordinarily long time.

One Minimink customer told us that the blanket her daughter received as a baby 19½ years ago is still part of her daily life. Nearly two decades later, she chose another Minimink — this time for the arrival of her granddaughter.

From one generation to the next.

That’s the sort of gift story we could never manufacture ourselves.

A Gift for a New Home

Housewarming gifts can be surprisingly difficult.

You may not know someone’s exact decorating plans, and very personal homewares can be risky unless you know their taste particularly well.

A beautiful throw offers something different: comfort as well as decoration.

Choose a colour that works with their home and it can live on a sofa, armchair or bed while making the new space feel a little more settled.

A Gift for Someone Leaving Home

Then there are the milestones that are exciting and slightly emotional at the same time.

A child leaving for university.

Moving into a first home.

Relocating for work.

Starting life somewhere new.

Something familiar and comforting can carry a little piece of home with them.

One of our long-time customers recently told us she has gifted Minimink blankets to her children when they left for university, as well as to her mum, nana, friends and new babies in the family.

Her explanation for why she keeps giving them was beautifully simple:

“When we can’t hu in person these provide the warmest hug!!”

We don’t think we could say it better.

A Gift for Someone Who Already Has Everything

We’ve all got one.

The person who doesn’t need anything, doesn’t want more clutter and is almost impossible to buy for.

For them, something that makes everyday life more comfortable can be a lovely alternative to another decorative object.

A blanket can be used rather than displayed.

It doesn’t require the recipient to find somewhere special to put it.

And there is something wonderfully indulgent about receiving a beautiful blanket that you might not have brought for yourself.

A Gift Doesn’t Need to Be Saved for a Milestone

Not every meaningful gift needs a major occasion attached to it.

Sometimes the reason is simply:

I saw this and thought of you.

A thank you.

A difficult week.

Someone you haven’t seen for too long.

A friend who needs a little looking after.

Or absolutely no reason at all.

Those can end up being the gifts people remember most.

Choose Something They’ll Actually Use

Whatever you give, we think this matters.

Beautiful things shouldn’t necessarily spend their lives saved for best.

Minimink blankets are made to be lived with — curled up under, moved from ed to sofa, washed when everyday life happens and, occasionally, surrendered entirely to the family dog.

And the stories our customers have shared with us have reminded us that something used everyday can eventually become much more meaningful than something kept pristine in a cupboard.

When You Can’t Give Them a Hug

Minimink has been part of Australian homes since 2003.

Over those years, our blankets have been given for new babies, birthdays, new homes, children leaving home and countless occasions we’ll never know about.

Some are still being loved decades later.

Perhaps that’s the loveliest thing about choosing a gift of comfort.

Long after the wrapping paper has disappeared, the feeling behind the gift can remain.
